Ralph Gets a Massive Weekend Opening Breaking the Internet and Creed 2

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald might be one of November’s biggest movies, but it could only manage one week at the top of the US box office chart. The Harry Potter spin-off made way for two sequels that took advantage of the long Thanksgiving weekend–Ralph Breaks the Internet and Creed II.

It’s been five years since the release of Wreck-It Ralph, but Ralph Breaks the Internet’s massive weekend gross proved that there was no dip in interest for the follow-up. The film scored the second highest Thanksgiving debut of all time–behind Frozen in 2013– and made $84.5 million over five days. As Box Office Mojo points out, Disney now holds the record for the three biggest Thanksgiving grosses ever.

The boxing sequel Creed II entered the US chart at No.2 and also set its own record. Its $55.8 million five-day debut is the largest opening for a live-action film over Thanksgiving, and it far outgrossed the first Creed, which opened with $29.6 million in 2015. This was another huge success for the Rocky series, which started more than 40 years ago.

The animated hit The Grinch dropped to one place to No.3, and has made an impressive $180 million in the three weeks. Although The Crimes of Grindelwald has fallen to No.4 after only a week in the US, the film has to date made an impressive $438 million worldwide, a number which will continue to rise as we head into December.

Less impressive was the weekend’s other new entry, the latest version of Robin Hood. This action-packed take on the classic legend starred Kingsman’s Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx and entered the chart at No.7. Robin Hood only made $9.1 million over five days, with $23 million taken worldwide in total. Considering the budget was reportedly $100 million, it ranks as one of the year’s biggest flops.

Elsewhere, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, comedy Instant Family, and thriller Widows were at Nos. 5, 6 and 8 respectively. The acclaimed drama Green Book rose from No.22 to No.9, having expanded its release to over 1,000 screens.

SpaceX push the limits of Rocket Recycling

Elon Musk’s vision of cheaper, more rapid launches to orbit gets lifted to a higher level when one of his Block 5 Falcon 9 rockets blasts off from Vandenberg Air Force Base carrying dozens of tiny spacecraft. The Block 5 version of SpaceX’s workhorse rocket is designed to be reused up to 10 times or more without refurbishment. The specific booster to be used was also launched in May (the first Block 5 launch) and then again in August.

The payload bay atop that Falcon 9 is going to be crowded — it’s loaded with 64 small satellites from 34 different organizations representing 17 nations. Spaceflight Industries purchased all the space on the Falcon 9 for a rideshare mission dubbed SSO-A SmallSat Express, which the company says will be the largest single rideshare mission from a U.S.-based launch vehicle so far.

The mission was originally set for July, but has been delayed multiple times to Nov. 19 and then until Wednesday. But on Tuesday evening, SpaceX announced that the launch is again on hold due to “extreme high-altitude winds.”

“We will announce a new launch date once confirmed with the Range,” SpaceX tweeted.

The University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Nevada Museum of Art, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Capella Space Corporation are among the organizations that’ll have satellites aboard the rocket.

The booster’s historic third landing will take place less than ten minutes later on the droneship Just Read the Instructions, stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

You can watch the entire mission live via SpaceX webcast. We’ll update this post when the new launch date is announced and embed the live feed here when it becomes available. Typically the broadcast begins about 15 minutes before scheduled launch.

Trouble in Releasing Robo 2.0 on screens

The Cellular Operators Association of India has accused 2.0 of promoting “obscurantist and anti-scientific attitudes towards mobile phone, towers and mobile services.”

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has demanded a ban against the release of 2.0. In its complaint against the film, the association of telecom operators has accused the film of promoting “obscurantist and anti-scientific attitudes towards mobile phone, towers and mobile services.”

According to Economic Times, COAI has written to the Central Board of Film Certification and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting requesting to revoke the permission for film’s public screening until its complaint is heard. It has also asked for a ban on 2.0’s teaser, trailer and promotional videos with immediate effect.

“The movie falsely depicts mobile phones and mobile towers as harmful to living creatures and the environment including birds and human beings,” COAI has alleged in its complaint.

COAI’s move comes with less than 60 hours for the film’s release. After being postponed multiple times, 2.0 is now set to hit the screens worldwide this Thursday. The advance booking for the film has already begun on a strong note.

Judging from the trailers, Akshay Kumar plays a supervillain who despises cell phone users. “Every person who owns a cell phone is a murderer,” says Akshay’s character in the trailer.

2.0 is director Shankar’s most ambitious project, made on a budget of over Rs 500 crore. It is also the country’s first film to be shot directly with 3D cameras. Starring Rajinikanth in the lead role, the film is expected to shatter box office records when it opens in cinemas on November 29.

Days before the release of the much-anticipated film 2.0 starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar in key roles, the film has now landed in trouble. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) on Tuesday lodged an official complaint with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

In the complaint letter sent to CBFC and I&B Ministry, the COAI has accused the makers of 2.0 of “falsely depicting mobile phones and mobile towers as harmful to living creatures and the environment including birds and human beings”.
