New Approach Found in Global Warming Studies

A Washington State University researcher has found that one-fourth of the carbon held by soil is bound to minerals as far as six feet below the surface. The discovery opens a new possibility for dealing with the element as it continues to warm the Earth’s atmosphere.

Marc Kramer, an associate professor of environmental chemistry at WSU Vancouver, drew on new data from soils around the world to describe how water dissolves organic carbon and takes it deep into the soil, where it is physically and chemically bound to minerals. Kramer and Oliver Chadwick, a soil scientist at the University of California Santa Barbara, estimate that this pathway is retaining about 600 billion metric tons, or gigatons, of carbon. That’s more than twice the carbon added to the atmosphere since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.

Scientists still need to find a way to take advantage of this finding and move some of the atmosphere’s extra carbon underground, but Kramer says the soils can easily retain more. For starters, a new understanding of the pathway is “a major breakthrough” in our understanding of how carbon goes underground and stays there, he said.

“We know less about the soils on Earth than we do about the surface of Mars,” said Kramer, whose work appears in the journal Nature Climate Change. “Before we can start thinking about storing carbon in the ground, we need to actually understand how it gets there and how likely it is to stick around. This finding highlights a major breakthrough in our understanding.”

The study is the first global-scale evaluation of the role soil plays in dissolved organic carbon and the minerals that help store it. Kramer analyzed soils and climate data from the Americas, New Caledonia, Indonesia and Europe, and drew from more than 65 sites sampled to a depth of six feet from the National Science Foundation-funded National Ecological Observatory Network.

“These data show what kind of big science you can do when you have a national ecological observatory,” Kramer said. For one thing, they let the researchers construct a global-scale map for this pathway of soil carbon accumulation.

Comparing different ecosystems, Kramer saw that moist environments sequestered far more carbon than dry ones. In desert climates, where rain is scarce and water easily evaporates, reactive minerals retain less than 6 percent of the soil’s organic carbon. Dry forests are not much better. But wet forests can have as much as half their total carbon bound up by reactive minerals.

Wet forests tend to be more productive, with thick layers of organic matter from which water will leach carbon and transport it to minerals as much as six feet below the surface.

“This is one of the most persistent mechanisms that we know of for how carbon accumulates,” Kramer said.

But while climate change is unlikely to directly affect the deep -bound carbon, it can influence the pathway by which the carbon is buried. That is because the delivery system depends on water to leach carbon from roots, fallen leaves and other organic matter near the surface and carry it deep into the soil, where it will attach to iron- and aluminum-rich minerals eager to form strong bonds.

If temperatures near the surface warm, there can be less water moving through soils even if rainfall amounts stay the same or increase. More of the water that does fall can be lost to evaporation and plant respiration, making less water available to move carbon for long-term storage.

Jags bench QB Blake Bortles Favors Cody Kessler

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Blake Bortles is done as the Jaguars’ starting quarterback — for 2018, anyway.

Coach Doug Marrone said backup Cody Kessler will take over for the rest of the season, beginning with Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts at TIAA Bank Field, as the Jaguars (3-8) try to snap a seven-game losing streak. He announced the move on Monday several hours after firing offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

“It’s not a knee-jerk reaction,” Marrone said. “I really feel like at the end of the day we’ve got to try to get better production out of our passing game or more consistent production in our passing game.”

Bortles, who is 24-48 as a starter, has played poorly this season despite completing a career-high 60.4 percent of his passes. He has thrown for less than 150 yards in four of his past six games, was benched against Houston on Oct. 21 after losing two fumbles, and has thrown just 13 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Per ESPN Stats & Information, Bortles’ Total QBR of 49.0 ranks 25th among 31 qualified quarterbacks this season. He ranked 12th last season, when he threw 21 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions and helped lead the Jaguars to the AFC Championship Game.

Bortles did throw for 376 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in the Jaguars’ victory over New England in Week 2, 388 yards in a Week 4 victory over the New York Jets and a career-high 430 yards in a Week 5 loss at Kansas City. He also threw a career-high four interceptions and lost a fumble in the Chiefs game.

Turnovers have been Bortles’ biggest issue. He leads the NFL in turnovers (93) and interceptions (74) since he entered the league in 2014. Yet he also is second in franchise history in passing yards (17,500) and passing touchdowns (103) in 72 starts.

In what could be the last start of his Jaguars career, Bortles completed 12 of 23 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions in Sunday’s 24-21 loss at Buffalo. One of his interceptions was a pass thrown behind receiver Keelan Cole that got tipped. The other was a good throw that bounced off tight end James O’Shaughnessy’s hands.

Bortles also badly underthrew Cole on another short pass in which the ball fluttered after it left his hand and was off the mark by several yards.

Bortles might not start again this season, but he still might have a future with the Jaguars. He signed a three-year, $54 million contract extension in February that lasts through the 2020 season. He is due a $1 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the 2019 league year and has $6.5 million of his 2019 base salary guaranteed.

If the Jaguars want to cut him after this season, it would cost them $16.5 million in dead money, though that figure drops to $9.5 million after June 1.

Kessler, whom the team acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns for a seventh-round pick in March, is 0-8 as a starter and has a 45.1 Total QBR (per ESPN Stats & Info). All of those starts came in his rookie season in 2016 with the Browns, who drafted Kessler in the third round out of USC.

Kessler has thrown for 1,662 yards and seven touchdowns with four interceptions. He completed 21 of 30 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown with one interception after replacing Bortles against the Texans earlier this season.

Kessler will have a new playcaller in Scott Milanovich, who was hired as the team’s quarterbacks coach last season after Hackett was promoted to offensive coordinator. Milanovich, who led the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts to a 43-47 record and one Grey Cup title in four seasons as their head coach (2012-16), has previously served as an offensive coordinator with four teams, including the Rhein Fire (2005) and Cologne Centurions (2006) of NFL Europe and the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes (2008-11).

The Jaguars’ offense under Hackett in 2017 was one of the NFL’s most productive, leading the league in rushing and finishing sixth in total offense and fifth in scoring. However, the offense has regressed in 2018, partly because of a large number of injuries (seven starters or key reserves have missed multiple games, including running back Leonard Fournette) but also because of Bortles’ poor play.

The Jaguars rank 22nd in total offense, 16th in rushing, 22nd in passing and 28th in scoring. The Jaguars either had the lead or had a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter of each of their past four games yet failed to win.

“I felt I needed to make a change to get us an opportunity to win some games,” Marrone said of his decision to fire Hackett, who had coached with Marrone the past nine seasons at Syracuse, Buffalo and Jacksonville.

The Jaguars also lost another starting offensive lineman Monday when Marrone said the team would be placing left guard Andrew Norwell on injured reserve because of an ankle injury he suffered against the Bills. Norwell, whom the team signed to a five-year, $66.5 million contract with $30 million guaranteed in March, is the fourth Jaguars starting offensive lineman to end up on IR.

Left tackle Cam Robinson (knee), his replacement Josh Wells (groin) and center Brandon Linder (knee) also are on IR, although the team is hoping to bring Wells back later this season.

7 Healthy Foods That Are High in Vitamin D

Vitamin D is unique, because it can be obtained from food and especially from sun exposure. However, up to 50% of the world’s population may not get enough sunlight, and 40% of people in the US may get enough. They have vitamin D deficiency.

This is partly because people spend more time indoors, use sunscreen when exposed to the sun and eat a western diet low in sources of this vitamin.

The Recommended Daily Intake (IDR) is 400 IU (International Unit) of foods rich in vitamin D per day, but many health organizations recommend obtaining 600 IU. If you do not get enough sunlight, your vitamin D intake should be close to 1,000 IU per day. To make this possible, below is the list of 7 healthy SupplementsBit that are rich in vitamin D:

The fish that gives more vitamin D about 320 mg per 100g. However, it is generally not specified if the salmon is wild or farmed. Although this seems to be of little importance, there may be some difference. Some studies have found even higher levels of IU of vitamin D in wild salmon, reaching up to 1,300 IU per serving. On the other hand, the salmon grown on average only contained 25% of that amount.

However, that means that one serving of farmed salmon contains about 250 IU of vitamin D, which is 63% of the IDR. It gives as about 320 mg per 100g in its canned version.

Go ahead and make a multitude of different protein dishes full of vitamin D such as this salad of salmon and prawns, new salmon burgers or some rolls of smoked salmon with gulas.

Herring and sardines

The herring is a popular fish tasted all over the planet. It can be served raw, canned, smoked or in vinegar. It is also one of the best sources of vitamin D that exist. Fresh Atlantic herring provides 1,628 IU for each 3.5-ounce serving (100 grams), which is four times the IDR.

If fresh fish does not appeal to you, pickled herring is also a great source of vitamin D, providing 680 IU for each 3.5-oz. (100-gram) serving. This is 170% of the IDR.

However, pickled herring also contains a high amount of sodium, which some people should perhaps be careful about. A sardine also contains vitamin D and is similar to herring which contains about 272 IU and it is 68% of IDR. It is necessary to mention that other types of fatty fish are also good sources of vitamin D.

Dairy products:

Cheeses, yoghurts and milk, especially soy or enriched varieties, are among our top vitamin D-rich foods, reaching up to 50mg / 100g. Take advantage and add calcium to your dishes.

Try to take it beyond dessert and use it for sauces like this recipe for lamb lean or in chicken drumsticks with yogurt.

We suggest the consumption of this type of food that always generates a good supply of vitamin D. In particular, a 100g serving of chanterelle mushrooms (Cantharellus cibarius) provide more of half of CDR.

Mushrooms produce vitamin D2, while animals produce vitamin D3. The mushrooms of some brands can contain between 130 and 450 IU of vitamin D2 per 3.5 ounces (100 grams).

Cod liver oil:

Cod liver oil is a popular supplement. If you do not like fish, you can choose to take cod liver oil, as it is a good way to obtain certain nutrients that are difficult to obtain from other sources. Cod liver oil is an excellent source of vitamin D. It has been used for many years to prevent and treat vitamin and amino acid deficiency in children.

Cod liver oil is also a fantastic source of vitamin A, with 90% of the IDR in a single teaspoon (4.9 ml). However, vitamin A can be toxic in large quantities.

Therefore, it is best to be cautious with cod liver oil and not take more than what is needed. With high contribution not only of vitamin D, with 1667mg / 100g , but also of Omega 3 and vitamin A. A simple spoonful of this oil covers the daily needs of vitamin D that we need.

Star food that cannot be missing in any balanced diet. We have spoken in other occasions of the benefits of the egg and this time we do it to include it in our top of foods rich in vitamin D with a contribution of 9mg / 100g.

The protein in an egg is found in the egg white including fat, vitamins and minerals are mainly found in the egg yolk.

Oysters are a type of clam that inhabits salt water. They are delicious, low in calories and full of nutrients.

A 3.5-ounce serving (100 grams) of wild oysters has only 68 calories, but contains 320 IU of vitamin D, which is 80% of the IDR.
